Co-op profile: Patrick O’Donnel

Print leaps off the page in a visual kaleidoscope to tell a story, give information or encourage collaboration.  Rooms become a canvas for interactive design and data visualization. Small Group Firm in Cambridge turns the ordinary into the extraordinary, and for Patrick J. O’Donnel, a second-year graduate student in the Information Design and Visualization program, a co-op at Small Group Firm presents an extraordinary opportunity to explore his academic and creative interests and learn about his field in ways nearly impossible in the classroom.

Founded by David Small, creative director, the team has designed innovative and creative visualization projects for the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington D. C., the Museum of Fine Art in Boston,, and the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway.  See more of their amazing projects on the Small Group Firm’s website.

O’Donnel woks as a Graphic Design Intern.  His job responsibilities include exploring visual solutions to graphics within interactive software, preparing visual and typographic conceptual design briefs, and developing visual styling for software documentation.

He said his co-op job gives him “…a unique view into the business behind design, from pitching concepts through the actualized installation.” The job also allows him to work with “…a multidisciplinary group of designers and programmers towards a common goal.” O’Donnel says his co-op job allows him to integrate his classroom work with his job. “The team I am surrounded by creates the custom media environments that I am interested in studying and creating. Data Visualization and Information Design are forefront in the team’s installations which teach, inform and intrigue visitors with digital media.”

O’Donnel said ,”Co-ops provide an excellent opportunity to show off the skills and knowledge you’ve been tirelessly gaining through your studies. The chance to network with small businesses and corporation in Boston and beyond is an invaluable experience. The co-op itself proves you are able to work in a team and can be an asset to future teams and employers.
