Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Tours PORT

The PORT (Publicly Organized Recreation Territory) designed by Assistant Professor Dan Adams and Lecturer Marie Law Adams of Landing Studio will hold its first public event on September 23. The PORT is part of the larger Rock Chapel Marine project in Boston Harbor – the conversion of a former oil tank farm into a shared use marine industrial salt dock and public access landscape.

A week ago, Massachusetts Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Rick Sullivan and Chelsea City Manager Jay Ash toured the project, which is a new model of high performance infrastructure, which integrates large scale industry and public access and balances regional transit sustainability with local recreation and ecological considerations.

The PORT recycles structures and materials from the former oil terminal as new elements of the park landscape. The project introduces more than 100 new trees and other habitat-supporting plantings to the industrial waterfront. The PORT is designed to take advantage of the seasonality of the salt industry by expanding into the salt stockpile area in the summer time when the industry is less active with basketball courts and large areas for public events.
