Lecture: The Generic Specific Continuum

scalar Architecture is an award winning international design firm based in New York City. scalar Architecture, as the term indicates, operates at a variety of scales collaborating with key expertise at each juncture of architecture and correlated fields. To these collaborations, ‘scalar’ provides an expansive utilization of architecture and its registers of program, geometry, context, aesthetics and form. The fruits of this work are urban, landscape, institutional, commercial, and residential projects.
scalar’s urban collaborative projects comprise of the ongoing first price for the re-development of Hamar, Norway, and chosen entries for Build a Better Burb and Elemental Chile -a low income housing modular competition. Landscape collaborative projects include the design for a large cross-programmed sustainable park in Madrid, Spain. Commercial projects include two sets of US restaurants, Recess and Flurt. Institutional projects include commissioned designs for the Woodstock Association Museum, the offices of the Dean at Cornell School’s of Architecture and an ongoing 100,000 sf medical building in NYC. Lastly, scalar’s residential work is comprised of dwellings and housing in Spain, Maine, and New York.
A 2006 Young Architect award recipient from the Architectural League, scalar Architecture, has been widely published in the US – Architectural Record, The Architect’s Newspaper, Interior Design, Princeton Architectural Press, Breathe, House Beautiful – and abroad in the following countries Canada, Germany, Norway, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Thailand, Japan, and China.
scalar Architecture’s Principal is Julio Salcedo, RA, Arq., LEED AP. Salcedo holds a BA in architecture and sculpture from Rice U., a Masters in Architecture from Harvard University. Before launching Scalar Architecture, Julio Salcedo worked for Pritzker prize winner -Rafael Moneo Architects-, Machado & Silvetti, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill among others.
Salcedo has taught at Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse University, Cornell University, and City College – where he is an associated professor. Salcedo has also written numerous articles, critiques and a book on scalar Architecture: “The Generic Specific Continuum” which charts the efficacy of architecture in the expanded realm.
