This Dialogue offers an immersion in one of Europe’s most innovative and culturally rich cities, Barcelona, a cosmopolitan destination with a highly diverse heritage and a thriving present. The courses will focus on Barcelona’s art, design and creativity, its transformative creative economy and its role in the European, Mediterranean and Spanish contexts. A stay in Madrid will be included.

DESTINATION

Barcelona and Madrid are thriving European cities with an exceptional creative culture and an innovative economy. Students will interact with creators, designers, entrepreneurs and economists. We will visit inspiring startups, exhibits, performances, and attend lectures, debates and special events –ranging from the spectacular designs of Antoni Gaudí to today’s disruptive gastronomy of Ferran Adrià. The dialogue includes a comparative approach between European and American cultures and an intensive introduction to Spanish culture and civilization.

COURSES

  • ARTE2501 – Art and Design Abroad: Spanish Culture though Art : Introduction to the creativity, art and design of the city of Barcelona, mostly focusing on its recent decades, yet keeping in mind its historical trajectory since classical times. We will focus on the role of creativity in today’s economy, and will examine some cases of entrepreneurship and innovation resulting from applying design thinking to fashion, gastronomy, media, advertising, and other fields.
  • ARCH4850 – Urban and Architectural History Abroad : We will study the city as a site of creativity, will visit some outstanding architectural and design examples, its artistic and design-based vitality. Students will engage in a creative project through drawing, photography, video or other media. The course includes an intensive program of visits and guest lectures so as to know first hand Barcelona and Madrid.
