FAQs for Graduates & Guests

Students graduating from certificate programs may participate in CAMD’s graduation ceremony, but are not eligible for the university’s commencement ceremony and will not have the option to complete the university’s graduation application form. Certificate program graduates with questions should email Moki Smith at mk.smith@northeastern.edu

All registered graduates may invite up to six guests to attend CAMD’s graduation exercises. Undergraduate students can pick up tickets in their department office. Graduate students will receive tickets electronically. Admission tickets are free.

Tickets are required for admission to Matthews Arena and will be collected at the door. If students are unable to pick up their guest tickets in advance, they will be held at a will call table, under the student’s name, on graduation day. Fire marshal regulations require every guest, including children (except infants), to have a ticket.

Please be sure you will be able to attend the ceremony before you indicate that you will march, as we reserve seating for all graduates who sign up to march. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Graduates will be issued six guest tickets. Because of the large number of graduates we expect to sign up to march at the ceremony, we will be unable to provide extra tickets for guest admission to Matthews Arena on the day of the graduation.

However, a limited number of additional admission tickets may be available beginning April 30. If available, a maximum of two additional tickets per marching graduate will be permitted. Registered graduates, both undergraduate and graduate, will be notified of availability via email on April 30. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come , first-served basis. Graduates picking up extra tickets must show their student ID.

All children except infants are required to have an admission ticket for the CAMD graduation ceremony.

Please email Richard Coren at r.coren@northeastern.edu with all details at least a week prior to graduation. If you do not provide notice of special needs prior to the ceremony, we will not be able to guarantee designated seating and assistance.

Please note: Matthews Arena is fully handicap-accessible, and designated seating will be available in the ballroom for graduates and guests with wheelchairs. We will have two ASL sign language interpreters at the front of the stage during the ceremony.

For the convenience of guests, we have put together a list of hotels in the Northeastern area.

Graduates do not need to order or purchase a cap and gown. Once a student has completed the Northeastern Graduation Application, they will automatically receive a cap and gown.

Caps and gowns for undergraduate and graduate students may be picked up at the Cabot Center/Solomon Court on Tuesday, May 1, or Wednesday, May 2, 9 a.m.–7 p.m. A student ID or comparable identification is needed to pick up your cap and gown. University Honor Cords may be picked up at the same time.

All students participating in the CAMD graduation ceremony must wear a cap and gown.

There is no formal dress code, however business casual is recommended. Graduates should wear appropriate clothing and comfortable footwear.

For the safety and security of those attending commencement, CAMD is restricting the size of bags that will be allowed into Matthews Arena on Friday, May 4. Any item larger than 12 inches by 12 inches, including, but not limited to, large bags, backpacks, packages, and large purses, will not be permitted inside and should be left at home. Anyone carrying such an item will be asked to return it to his or her vehicle. These are precautionary measures and are not in response to a specific threat. Thank you for your cooperation.

Graduates should plan on arriving no later than 2:45p.m. and can begin arriving at 2:15 p.m. Graduates will be organized into marching lines so that the processional may begin at 3:30 p.m. Guests may arrive starting at 2:45 p.m., and must be seated in the ballroom by 3:15 p.m. to allow the graduation processional to enter the ballroom without disruption. The commencement ceremony will conclude around 5:30 p.m.

To show respect for and to honor all our graduates, we ask that all graduates and their guests remain in their seats throughout the entire ceremony, which is expected to conclude around 5:30 p.m. Administration and graduates will exit first. Guests will follow after the recessional ends.

Guests may take photographs from their seats, but will not be allowed in the stage or aisle areas. A professional photographer will be near the stage to take photographs of all graduates as they approach the stage and receive their certificates.

Alcohol is not permitted. Ushers will be present to seize any alcohol and to prohibit any graduate who may have already consumed alcohol from participating in the ceremony. Cell phones and pagers should be turned off or operate in silent mode during the ceremony.

If you have a combined major and/or double major, you will walk across the stage once. However, both degree accomplishments will be announced when your name is called. You must declare on your Northeastern Graduation Application and CAMD Graduation Registration forms the degree/program in which you want to march.

We will have two ASL sign language interpreters at the front of the stage during the ceremony.

Light refreshments will be available in the ballroom immediately following the graduation ceremony.

Grad Images is the official photographer for graduation. Proofs will be available to view online and can be ordered online, by phone, or by mail.

If you registered for CAMD’s graduation ceremony but have changed your mind, please contact CAMD at 617.373.3682 ASAP, or no later than Friday, April 27.
