Waste is Information

Infrastructure Legibility and Governance

Waste is material information. Landfills are detailed records of everyday consumption and behavior; much of what we know about the distant past we know from discarded objects unearthed by archaeologists and interpreted by historians. And yet the systems and infrastructures that process our waste often remain opaque.  This book examines waste from the perspective of information, considering emerging practices and technologies for making waste systems legible and how the resulting datasets and visualizations shape infrastructure governance. He does so by looking at three waste tracking and participatory sensing projects in Seattle, São Paulo, and Boston. – Dietmar Offenhuber

Eyes on the Street and Camera in Your Eyes

Experience Design Lab

Designers and planners have long sought ways to better understand how humans experience the built urban environment. In this project we combine quantitative data from wearable eye-tracking glasses with qualitative data from interviews and observational studies to explore how this combination can provide new insights into how humans experience urban space. In an upcoming paper we detail the way the experiments were carried out in real-world urban environments, how we collected, processed and analyzed the resulting data and what we found out about what catches people’s attention and how we can use mobile eye-tracking together with other research methods to support processes that shape our built environment.
