2014 marks the 5oth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. We commemorate this 50 year anniversary by welcoming the Black History 101 Mobile Museum and Professor Griff of Public Enemy to Northeastern for a one-day pop-up exhibition.
The Black History 101 Mobile Museum is a collection of over 5,000 artifacts of Black memorabilia that dates from slavery, Jim Crow era, the Civil Rights and Black Power era to hip hop and popular culture. Founded by “the hip hop generation’s Arthur Schomburg” Khalid el-Hakim, a former Detroit School teacher. The museum will be in place all day at the Cabral Center.
“My mission is to raise the consciousness of the human family by sharing artifacts that celebrate the contributions, achievements, and experiences of African Americans,” states Khalid el-Hakim.
This year’s tour of the Museum features Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Professor Griff of Public Enemy who will speak on Malcolm X’s influence on Public Enemy and hip hop culture in general. Professor Griff is an internationally renowned educator, writer, producer, musician, platinum recording/spoken word artist, lecturer and founding member of the pioneering and revolutionary hip hop group Public Enemy. Professor Griff’s lecture will take place at 10:30am.
