Listen Hear: The Art of Sound is an exhibition of sound-based artworks by 12 artists and architects situated within the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and outside in public spaces.

Curated by Pieranna Cavalchini, the Museum’s Tom and Lisa Blumenthal Curator of Contemporary Art with Peggy Burchenal, the Museum’s Esther Stiles Eastman Curator of Education and Charles Waldheim, the Museum’s Ruettgers Curator of Landscaping. “It’s a thrilling undertaking to have artists from around the world re-envisioning how sound affects our galleries, performance spaces, courtyard, and surrounding neighborhoods,” Cavalchini said.

In addition to the sound installations inside the Museum, this exhibition includes the commission of a site-specific public artwork for the Ruggles MBTA station, created by O & A, (Bruce Odland, Hudson, NY and Sam Anger, Berlin). This real-time, interactive sound sculpture was developed through a residency with the Northeastern Center for the Arts in 2015. The artists worked with Design and Architecture students from Northeastern, and staff of the MBTA’s System Wide Accessibility (SWA) department.

Among the artists participating in this exhibition are: Philip Beesley, Toronto; Moritz Fehr, Berlin; David Grubbs, New York City; Elisa Hamilton, Arlington, MA; Ernst Karel, Boston; Lee Mingle  Paris; Helen Mirra, San Francisco; O & A, (Bruce Odland, Hudson, NY and Sam Anger, Berlin); Philippe Rahm, Paris; Teri Rueb, Buffalo, NY; and Su-Mei Tse, Berlin.
