Co-op Stories: Jessica Mertens, Time Inc.’s Travel + Leisure Magazine

Networking leads to full-time job after graduation

Area of Emphasis: Strategic Communication

As an Integrated Marketing Intern for Travel + Leisure Magazine in New York City, Jessica worked with sales representatives to brainstorm, create, and implement marketing campaigns for advertisers across print, digital, and social media platforms. With 4.8 million readers, the monthly magazine highlights the best leisure travel destinations and offers original web content with detailed destination guides.

“Being able to work for Time Inc. (our parent brand) was invaluable. Not only was Travel + Leisure an exciting and influential brand, I was surrounded by Time Inc.’s highly respected and incredible magazines, such as Fortune, Sports Illustrated and People. Because of this, I was able to network and meet colleagues from different brands and positions, which helped me fine tune my career goals.”

Despite having worked in the marketing department during co-op, the close connections Jessica was able to make across the company exposed her to new and exciting opportunities in the evolving publishing industry.

“The entire team – from my supervisor to the publisher – was eager to help me make the most of my experience and learn as much as possible. I am so beyond thrilled to say that this co-op led to a full-time job offer… [with] the Creative Services team after graduation. This co-op encouraged me to explore new fields that interested me, and I am so beyond grateful for the experience.”
