Our curriculum integrates practical skills, essential communication theory, and the opportunity to develop a distinct area of emphasis.
All majors have the chance to participate in the University’s signature cooperative education program, to study abroad, and to take service-learning courses.
Our faculty—thirteen new hires over the past five years—is scholarly, active, and committed to undergraduate education.
Our faculty regularly push the conversation forward in their field. Read about their latest achievements.

Our students are active, tireless, and curious explorers of culture and communication.
From just off campus to the other side of the globe, students involved in co-op are learning the meaning of "hands-on" education.
Welcome to the Communication Studies Department
Our competitive program features a flexible curriculum that allows majors to combine foundational courses, distributed requirements, and electives to create a unique plan of study to prepare you for the real world. The most popular areas of emphasis include strategic communication, production and entertainment, advocacy and social activism, digital communication and new media, communication and health, and organizational and interpersonal communication, and students often combine new areas of study tailored to their individual interests.
Communication Studies majors at Northeastern can also gain up to 18 months of professional experience working with more than 2,000 employers across the United States and around the world. The chance to participate in experiential education through co-op distinguishes our department as our majors graduate with a unique mix of theory and practice.
If you have any questions about the communication studies major, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to seeing you on campus soon!
