Combined Majors

The College of Arts, Media, and Design offers a broad range of curricular options encouraging students to design their own course of study. Combined Majors, Half Majors, and Independent Majors let students combine their interests into one major.

Combined Majors integrate two subject areas into a defined major with a synthesized curriculum. Students interested in pursuing a combined major should meet with their academic advisor.

The human services major is designed to prepare students for careers in social change by providing them with the theoretical and skill-based background necessary for practice and research. In the combined major in linguistics and communication studies, students have an opportunity to learn about the formal structures and analysis of human languages across multiple levels (sounds, words, phrases and sentences, meaning) while simultaneously mastering the fundamentals of effective communication and of communication theory and practice. Students receive extensive training in writing and speaking, both for a technical audience and more generally; and they explore the role of language and communication in society, both from a broad theoretical perspective and in narrower, more focused and applied domains.
