Angus Forbes – Interrogating Complexity

This talk presents a range of research projects and artworks that introduce current trends in the field information visualization, including: interactive representations of biological pathways that enable the visual analysis of protein-protein interactions; dynamic network visualizations of the human brain connectome; and a public art installation that explores connections between photographic images and literary themes in the work of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ One Hundred Years of Solitude. In addition to describing details about these individual projects, the talk will explore the potential of integrating artistic and scientific approaches to research.

Dr. Angus Forbes is an assistant professor in the Department of  Computer Science at University of Illinois at Chicago, where he directs the Creative Coding Research Group within the Electronic Visualization Laboratory. His research investigates novel techniques for visualizing and interacting with complex scientific information; his interactive artwork has been featured at museums, galleries, and festivals throughout the world. Angus is chairing the IEEE VIS Arts Program (VISAP’16), to be held in Baltimore, Maryland in October 2016, a forum that promotes dialogue about the relation of aesthetics and design to visualization research.
