Medical illustrators are highly skilled professionals that have specific training in the areas of medicine and general science as well as visual communications. Their training allows them to have a specific “scientific sensibility” that helps them understand and judge complex scientific information, and communicate with experts in the different medical areas by being familiar with the subject matter and terminology. The goal of a medical illustrator is to produce visuals that convey biomedical ideas and concepts that are difficult to represent in words or photographs, in a clear and accurate way.
Daniel holds a master’s degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he studied as a Fulbright Scholar and a 5-year degree in Biology/Zoology from the University of Lisbon in Portugal.
Since 2004, Daniel is on staff at the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) as their Interactive Medical Media Designer and medical illustrator. In his work there, he interfaces with international authors and in-house medical leaders to create interactive data visualization modules, interactive case studies, and illustrations for the print and online versions of the Journal.
In his presentation, Daniel will talk about his training and his professional path. He will also present multiple examples of his illustrations, interactive learning graphics and interactive data visualizations in the context of the work he produces for the NEJM.
