This is the first lecture of our Social Justice and Design Fall Lecture series, Alan Ricksof Mass Design will present the firm’s work.
Mass Design was the 2017 winner of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for their project, “Justice is Beauty.
This lecture will follow that of Bryan Stevenson, Founder of the Equal Justice Initiative and Author of Just Mercy. Mass Design is working with the Equal Justice Initiative to design and build the Memorial to Peace and Justice.
Alan co-founded MASS Design Group and as Chief Operating Officer manages global operations and leads projects ranging from architecture to policy—a portfolio that continues to expand the role of design in advancing a more equitable world. With co-founder Michael Murphy, they write on a range of topics including architecture, development, and social justice including in The Journal of Architecture, Stanford Social Innovation Review, and the Huffington Post. Alan has been appointed as Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the Harvard Innovation Lab and is a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum (2014-2019). He recently gave a TED Talk, which chief TED curator Chris Anderson described as “a different language around what architecture can aspire to be.”
