Meet a Tony-Nominated Broadway Composer/Lyricist and Playwright

The first NU Broadway visiting artist for this year is the Tony-nominated and award-winning composer Laurence O’Keefe. He will visit campus this Friday, September 15.

Mr. O’Keefe won the Lucille Lortel Award and  Outer Critics’ Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical for Bat Boy: The Musical. It also won two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He co-wrote Heathers, a musical based on the movie of the same name, which premiered in Los Angeles in 2013 and off-Broadway in 2014. It will be produced on the NU campus this fall.

He will be joined for the event by his frequent collaborator Nell Benjamin with whom he wrote Legally Blonde: The Musical, which ran on Broadway. They received Drama Desk nominations for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Lyrics, as well as a Tony Award nomination for Best Score.

NU Broadway showcases the new generation of theatre artists who are reshaping New York theatre. Its focus is on both the artistic process and professional career preparation. All theatre majors and minors are invited to attend the discussion with Mr. O’Keefe on Friday, 3:30-4:45 in the NU Theatre Lab, 334 Ryder Hall.

It will be hosted by Allen Feinstein and is co-sponsored by the Music and Theatre Departments, and NU Stage. All are welcome!
