How can we design for networks of human and non-human actors?
Join the Center for Design (CfD) at the Design Research Society (DRS) Festival of Emergence for a continued conversation about addressing the complexity of global challenges through meta-design and system thinking. This Moment will take the form of an open conversation between invited panelists and a moderator, as well as engaging the participants.
The movement towards a new frame, status, and role for design in society – where system thinking and meta-design are central – is
not new. The ongoing pandemic and the concurrent acceleration of the digital transformation and the diffusion of AI-based and
data-intensive solutions increased the sense of urgency for re-framing/re-thinking/redesigning design in that perspective. We want to waive – and build upon – the existing and ongoing conversations, initiatives, movements, networks, platforms, and works that aim at re-framing design through meta-design, systems thinking, and systemic design approaches, to kick-off a shared conversation and concerted actions.
The first gathering took place on July 15th for an informal conversation around the following questions:
- Is Design too centered on humans? How to design for human and non-human actors?
- What are the boundaries of a system in systemic design?
- What is the role of proximity (locality?) in global systems?
- What about diversity and plurality in systemic design?
- How does meta-design relate to system thinking and systemic design?
The second gathering – the Moment we are proposing – will build on the July event to lead towards the definition of collaborative
actions (a meta-platform? a meta-manifesto?) to foster ongoing conversations on the future of design in society through the lenses of system thinking and meta-design.

About the Design Research Society (DRS) Festival of Emergence
The DRS Festival of Emergence is envisioned as a new type of event. Not as formal as a conference, more interesting and unpredictable than a meeting, something which transcends timezones and geographies, allows people to ‘drop in’ when they fancy and is built upon novel, original, and experimental participant-generated content.
