Life’s been good to Clare. She’s stylish, rich and has great hair. She’s kind of like a contestant on The Bachelor. Not the dramatic, villainous one, but the nice one that rubs the backs of the girls who are crying.

But when Clare meets a radical young man ranting in the piazza, he pretty much opens her eyes to a bunch of stuff about the world she can’t unsee. Clare’s mom and sister totally don’t get it, but suddenly, 13th century Italy feels a lot more complicated.

Poor Clare is a modern take on the timeless question: what does living a good life really mean?
