Come Celebrate the Publication of Professor Deirdre Loughridge’s New Book Sounding Human: Music and Machines, 1740/2020.
Taking place Tuesday December 12th from 4:30 – 6pm in the Theatre Lab / Ryder Hall.
In Sounding Human, Deirdre Loughridge explores the making and breaking of “human versus machine” logic in and through music. From the 1737 invention of what became the first musical android to the creation of a “sound wave instrument” by a British electronic composer in the 1960s, and the chopped and pitched vocals produced by sampling singers’ voices in pop music, she shows how musical artifacts have been—or can be—used to help explain and contest what it is to be human. The event will feature remarks by music faculty and refreshments.
