Guest Lecture: Kate McLean, sensorymaps

October 09, 2018

Kate McLean, an artist and designer, joined us for a video-call guest lecture. She is the creator of smellmaps of cities around the world, focusing on human perception of  urban smellscapes – rendering it as “eye-visible” through mapping. While the visual dominates and the digital distances, Kate believes we should re-connect with our sensing selves so as to relate to where, and who we are. She finds the sense of smell intriguing, elusive and ephemeral… and that is of itself captivating and worthy of study.

Kate has recorded a BBC Podcast about her work and the smells identified in cities around the world. “Smellmap: Amsterdam” was exhibited in the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum where she also organized a sensory data visualization workshop.
