Julia earned her MFA in Photography and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. She has received numerous awards for her photography and video work including an Aaron Siskind grant as well as The School of Visual Arts’ alumni grant. In addition to her graduate studies Julia has studied under notable photographers Mary Ellen Mark and Tina Barney. Julia describes her art practice as an investigation of the psychological landscapes of both herself as well as her community.
Her interest is focused on the complexity of interpersonal relationships, community health and education. Her work has appeared in a number of international publications like Huffington Post, The Guardian, and The World Photography Organization among others. Julia places an emphasis on education through photography. She delivered lectures on her photography at TEDx Connecticut College focusing on the theme “Not All Who Wander are Lost”, capturing ideas of exploration, adventure, and discovery.
