Exhibition: The Multiverse of Identity, Recent Works by Favianna Rodriguez
Dates: September 16 – December 13, 2015
Location: Gallery 360
Artist, entrepreneur & cultural organizer Favianna Rodriguez is one of the most important visionaries of our time. Favianna is most known for her vibrant posters dealing with politics, migration, globalization, and women’s rights, however in The Multiverse of Identity, the exhibition at Northeastern’s Gallery 360, features Ms. Rodriguez’s rarely exhibited abstract prints.
In this new series of work, one is able to experience the bold & vibrant color palette that is identified with Ms. Rodriguez’s political artwork, with an openness that is less message driven. Equally influenced by the history of art & science, this exhibition was inspired by a recent exhibition of the artist Henri Matisse’s work, and Favianna’s favorite scientific television program “Cosmos”.
Of Peruvian descent, Favianna was raised in Oakland, California where the street art culture of 1980s influenced her as a young artist. She spent her adolescence between the Bay Area and Mexico City, where she immersed herself in the history of murals and the political messages they convey to large and diverse audiences. At the age of 19, Favianna was awarded a residency at the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles, where she was able to study artwork and graphics associated with the Black Panthers in the 1960s and the feminist movement in the 70s.
While widely known for her cultural organizing and political artwork, Favianna began working with abstract figures in 2005, as a way to return to an exploration of the basics of line, composition, and texture. In these new prints, while abstract, we see shapes that are familiar, as if they have evolved from the more recognizable characters in her social movement posters.
This exhibition has been organized in conjunction with Favianna Rodriguez artist residency with the Northeastern Center for the Arts.
