Seth Mulliken

Seth Mulliken’s research examines the intersection of race and sound in public space. Specifically, he is interested in how the soundscape, the ambience of sounds social life takes place in, produces and is produced by the logic of race. His dissertation is an ethnographic examination of the co-constitutive nature of sound and race in the College Park neighborhood in Raleigh, NC. He proposes that the intersection of race and sound reveals the immersive qualities of both, suggesting the need for theoretical interventions that can address the continuing influence of white privilege and white supremacy.

He has published on music in science-fiction cinema, the sonic art of cooking, and Japanese noise music. His current research brings media ecologies and media “ubiquities” into consideration with race and sound in public space.

Mr. Mulliken received his MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University and is completing his PhD in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media from North Carolina State University.
