Northeastern alumna Skye Moret, who graduated with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Information Design and Visualization, was part of a winning team that participated in the National Geographic and Sky Ocean Ventures Ocean Plastic Innovation Challenge. The competition asked problem solvers from around the globe to develop novel solutions to tackle the world’s plastic waste crisis. Skye’s team, “Perpetual Plastic,” which was recognized with first place in the Data Visualization track, created a 46’ (14m) diameter data-driven art installation out of marine debris – namely flip-flops – in Bali that is a flow diagram describing the transformation and fate of all plastic ever made.

“Coming from a background in marine plastic pollution science and then getting an MFA in Information Design & Visualization from Northeastern, this award validated the importance of synthesizing science and design, and data visualization’s diverse role in creating actionable engagement,” said Skye. “As visual literacy and environmental activism and anxiety increase daily, how we disseminate information and activate inclusive forms of discourse is critical to promoting global efforts such as curbing mismanaged plastic waste.”
