At an upcoming New York City event, CAMD faculty member Thomas Starr, Art + Design, will be honored as a winner of the 50 Books | 50 Covers Competition for his cover design of the Yale University Press book Database of Dreams. The event, which takes place on September 14 at the Scholastic Auditorium in NYC, is hosted by Design Observer and AIGA Design Awards and celebrates the design winners, while focusing on “what’s next in book design.”

“Receiving awards is always gratifying, but as the longest continuously-running design competition in the U.S., with its limitation to books, its international scope, and its limited number of awards, 50 Books | 50 Covers has been something of a quest,” Starr explained. “For the jury to include me among these peers is a supreme validation. It reflects the earlier judgment of those at Yale University Press who embraced my unorthodox design.”

Professor Starr teaches Graphic and Information Design at CAMD, and his design for Database of Dreams, has also previously won Best in Category among general trade books at the 60th New England Book Show (read more about that award here) and was included in the Association of American University Presses’ Book, Jacket, and Journal Show, an exhibition currently traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada.
