For the second year in a row, Northeastern University’s College of Art, Media and Design (CAMD) has been listed as one of Billboard’s top schools for music industry students.
The Bachelor of Science in music with a concentration in music industry is the first program of its kind in Boston. “The program is designed for those interested in every facet of the industry, with a focus on entrepreneurial thought leadership and ethical change,” Billboard noted in its annual write-up. Alumni include Noah Kahan’s manager Drew Simmons and songwriter Annie Schindel, who helped craft the track “Red Wine Supernova.”
On campus, students can join classes like “Actionable Analytics in the Music Industry” to “Artist Management” and “Making a Festival.” They can also gain experience in music supervision and production with Green Line Records and Good Dog Licensing.
Good Dog Licensing, which connects creators and media makers, is a “unique, fully-functioning music licensing service in a university setting,” said David Herlihy, teaching professor of music. “Copyright is the spine of the music industry and [Good Dog Licensing] puts copyright theory into practice,” he added.
Students can continue with their experiential learning through CAMD’s cooperative education program. Co-ops give students the opportunity to gain real world experience at top companies in music, including Universal Pictures, Lionsgate, and the Harry Fox Agency, which they can then apply in the classroom.
