The Reinventing Local TV News Project at Northeastern is launching its next phase of research and expansion, hiring fellows and co-ops to work in five newsrooms around the country.

Mike Beaudet, Professor of the Practice at the School of Journalism and Emmy award-winning TV news investigative reporter, is the project lead.

Through partnerships with the newsrooms, the project will continue research aimed at engaging younger audiences on digital platforms. Two of the partners are new additions to the project: Boston.com and 910 Media Group in Traverse City, Michigan. These newsrooms will host year-long Stanton Innovation Fellows – early career video storytellers – beginning in January 2027.

Boston.com editor Kaitlyn Johnston explains, “Boston.com has always embraced experimentation in digital media. The Stanton Innovation Fellowship is an exciting opportunity to test new ideas, strengthen our approach to video and social media, and better understand how local journalism can serve younger audiences. We can’t wait to get started.”

Josh Trust, Chief Operating Officer of 910 Media Group says, “The future of local journalism is not about choosing between broadcast and digital — it is about developing strong, relevant storytelling for every platform. The Digital Content Creator fellowship will help us accelerate that work while giving an emerging journalist the opportunity to experiment, learn, and make a meaningful impact in our newsroom.”

In addition to the fellowships, the program will sponsor six-month co-op positions for Northeastern students at WCBS in New York, WCVB in Boston, and WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut. This is all part of a $3 million dollar grant funded by the Stanton Foundation and Northeastern University.

Students interested in applying for a co-op position may find more information here.
