Trying on different hats within TJ Maxx & Marshalls’ parent company
Area of Emphasis: Strategic Communication
Brianna has leveraged her time on co-op to explore different career paths within TJX Companies, a family of discount apparel and home fashion stores including TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods. In Spring 2015, she began as a public relations intern at corporate headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts, just 20 miles west of Northeastern’s Boston campus.
“My PR team responded to requests from media outlets for fashion pieces for photo shoots, news segments, and blog posts. It was rewarding to see the items I chose being featured in a magazine the next month or aired on The Today Show during a merchandise segment.”
For her second co-op placement, she decided to give Los Angeles a try and applied for a position as an Associate Merchandise Buyer in the company’s satellite office. In this role, she travels with buyers in market, helping negotiate with vendors, planning future purchases, and analyzing internal and external buying trends.
Thanks to the flexible curriculum at Northeastern, Brianna has also picked up a very useful minor in Business.
“Having a background knowledge of accounting has helped me read different financial statements and interpret how my purchasing decisions would affect the company. I am excited to see how the products I choose will on the floors in the next couple of months!”
