Congratulations to Elizabeth Glowacki, Associate Teaching Professor of Communication Studies, jointly appointed in the Department Of Health Sciences Bouve College!  The book Dr. Glowacki edited Mental Health Case Studies With Implications for Communication, was released this Summer by Kendall Hunt.

Congratulations also to Ashleigh Shields, Assistant Teaching Professor of Communication Studies and the Department of Health Sciences Bouve College, who contributed a chapter to the book.

Dr. Glowacki writes, “This book takes a multidisciplinary approach to mental health and looks how at communication plays a role in managing, responding to, and advocating for mental health in four major areas: the criminal justice system, health care settings, close relationships, and organizations. This book brings together renowned scholars in their respective fields who have written theoretically-informed case studies that address timely topics including communication breakdowns and law enforcement, medication use, post-COVID condition, eating disorders, and stigma in healthcare.”

The book recieved many glowing reviews, including:

“This book brings together communication scholars in a meaningful and inspiring way. Each chapter presents clear definitions, a real-life scenario, and discussion questions that support classroom learning with focus and clarity. Every module offers a phenomenal compilation of essential mental health terms while connecting to an applicable, emotion-evoking case study that highlights the importance of understanding mental health in today’s society. Each section concludes with valuable teaching tips and discussion questions that encourage students to take part in thought-provoking conversations. I highly recommend this textbook for classroom use.”
– Alicia Booth, PhD, Utah Tech University

“This compelling casebook fills a critical gap in legal and professional education by bringing the realities of mental health directly into the work of representing clients. Through vivid, real-world scenarios involving whistleblowers, adoptive parents, prisoners, and others navigating high-stakes situations, it shows how legal and institutional experiences themselves can shape and strain mental health. By translating psychological research into clear, practical guidance, it equips students to better understand, communicate with, and effectively serve the people who depend on them in moments of real vulnerability.”
– Jennifer S. Bard, JD, MPH, PhD, University of Cincinnati
