Rocket League is a critically praised and award-winning game. 

Northeastern’s esports team, composed of students from various departments and majors who share a passion for gaming, is making a name for itself, with its Rocket League team ranking in the #1 slot for the Eastern Conference of Tespa Rocket League. These Conference Power Rankings were just released by Rocket League Garage, the world’s first Rocket League fan site. For weeks, the Rocket League team has been steamrolling its competition, qualifying with ease for the Eastern Conference, which is why predictions indicate that “Northeastern University will fly through the Conference Round-Robin without struggling.”

The game of Rocket League itself, a critically praised and award-winning game, is often described as “soccer, but with rocket-powered cars” and attracts professional players from around the world. It is fast-paced, with matches that typically last five minutes long and include a sudden death overtime if the game is tied at that point. Matches can be played from between one-on-one up to four-on-four players.

Rocket League, however, is just one of the Northeastern esports team’s focuses this year. They also play Overwatch competitively, as well as providing opportunities for members to strategize and collaborate together. The team meets on-campus weekly, and has seen an uptick in interest as esports grow in popularity within the gaming industry and beyond.   

“Playing esports is a chance to engage in a team-based activity that allows you to really get to know your colleagues,” said Kurt Dean, President of the esports team. “We have an exciting year ahead of us, as we aim to add more competitive teams and grow both our membership and staff positions.”
