Internationally acclaimed performance artist and activist Tim Miller returns to Northeastern to perform and to create an original student performance during a week-long intensive co-sponsored by the Northeastern Center for the Arts. Miller has made a career of blending activism into his one-man performances. “I knew from the time I was 15 or 16 that if I wanted to tell stories about my gay identity and outspoken political perspectives, I’d have to create those stories myself as a writer/performer.”  Miller just received the 2017 Association for Theatre in Higher Education Ellen Stewart Award for Career Achievement in Professional Theatre, and he continues to break new ground.

Miller will perform the Boston premiere of Rooted, his new one-person play, in the Ryder Theatre Lab. He will share stories of family trees and the hidden LGBT histories that live among the branches. Mixing sex and politics, humor and hope, Miller charts the growth of queer citizenship in America and the new challenges rooted in today’s political environment.  Following his work at Northeastern, Miller will bring Rooted to New York at Dixon Place on October 14 and 21.

In addition, Miller will be working intensely with NU students, who will write and perform works expressing their histories, passions, and identities in Body Maps. Miller says, “My goal is to share a variety of strategies to create original performances from the tremendous energies and stories that are present in our lives. Using our own memories and myths, we will see where a deep sense of personal history creates performance that jumps out from our bodies onto the stage.”
