Studio faculty member John David Todd is part of a design team that was recently awarded a Progressive Architecture Award.  The project, entitled “House of Horns,” is an 8500-square foot home embedded into a hillside in Los Altos, CA. The design firm, WOJR, is based here in Cambridge and thinks of itself as an “organization for architecture,” a collaborative venture spanning the creative spectrum, from urbanism to art, and the breadth of their approach is evident in the complexity of their latest residential project.

The “horns” refer to six skylights and clerestories positioned throughout the house that register the cycles of the day. Building on an existing foundation of a Spanish Style home, the design team sought to subvert the conventions of suburban residential typology.

As one of the jurors noted: “I like how it splits into individual elements that come together very well, but also break down the scale. The way it’s established on existing foundations that were extrapolated into something radically different is really powerful.” — juror Reto Geiser

Now in their 65th year, Architect Magazine’s Progressive Architecture (P/A) Awards recognize as yet unbuilt projects demonstrating overall design excellence and innovation in the field of architecture.
