Dr. Kao’s research focuses on the intersection of the digital technology economy and political and social change. An anthropologist by training, she uses ethnography to trace relationships between social hierarchy and financial value in tech companies and explores the emergence of new modalities of labor through the lens of kinship. She has taught anthropology, science and technology studies, and gender studies courses at University of California, Santa Cruz and Stanford University.
