Matthew Pitchford

Matthew Pitchford earned his PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His research uses computational and digital humanities methods to draw out the unique communication dynamics at play within digital communities, engaging with phenomena such as radicalization, polarization, and identity politics.

His work has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric, and Public Affairs, and has been recognized by the National Communication Association and the Rhetoric Society of America. He is also an award-winning instructor in communication and rhetoric, including the High Impact Teacher Award from the College of Arts, Media, and Design at Northeastern University, where he has most recently been working as Postdoctoral Teaching Associate in the Department of Communication. His teaching is oriented around empowering students to use speech in the service of creativity, identity, and community.

A native of Seattle, Washington, Pitchford has called Boston home since 2021.
