Students initially got hit with a bill for $157,000 after requesting video from the Boston Police body camera pilot program. And then they learned a lesson about navigating the state’s public records law when agencies don’t want to hand over information, according to  Mike Beaudet, Investigative Reporting professor and WCVB-TV investigative reporter. In Massachusetts, the videos are considered public records.

Students Siyi Zhao, Jane Cassingham, Pranav Temburnikar, and Kevin Barasia participated in the project.

The investigative report aired May 16 on WCVB’s “5 Investigates.” Watch the video and read the story.
