Communication Studies associate professor Matthew Nisbet spoke with USA Today about Pope Francis’ new encyclical, titled “Laudato Si’” (“Praise Be To You”), which urges people to help protect the environment. Within the 184-page document, which the Pope approved and signed, are suggestions to do things as simple as opening your windows during the summer, instead of turning on air conditioning.

For moderate Republicans and Catholics who have voted Republican, the pope’s message could “elevate climate change into the box of five issues that they think about” in the voting booth, Nisbet says.
