Liz Allen

Liz Allen is the Associate Director of Research Development in CAMD. She provides strategic grant writing training and resources for faculty and supports interdisciplinary partnerships for research. Liz has experience developing successful proposals for private foundations and federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, Department of Defense, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Energy, and the Economic Development Administration. Liz holds a PhD in Environmental Science from Washington State University. Her dissertation research applied participatory system dynamics modeling to enhance the usability of regional climate models and support public engagement in policymaking concerning food, energy, and water systems. Prior to working in research development, Liz was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Washington State’s Center for Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources and Northeastern’s Global Resilience Institute, where she managed community-based socioecological resilience research and participatory planning initiatives in the Columbia River Basin, New England, and the Gulf Coast. Liz’s approach to research development is informed by an ongoing commitment to engaging diverse forms of expertise and leveraging the transformative potential of higher education for climate justice.

Previously, Liz has worked aboard commercial fishing boats in Alaska collecting data for NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service, served as a US Peace Corps Volunteer focusing on science education and environmental conservation in Armenia, bartended, and worked as a grant writer for Worcester MA’s Regional Environmental Council, a grassroots food justice and youth development nonprofit. She is a board member of the international Sustainable Consumption Research and Action Initiative and is active in local urban gardening and energy justice initiatives.
