Maggie Williams

Maggie Williams, Ph.D., is known for her work on media and culture, intercultural communication, critical mobilities, social justice, and the Caribbean. Her research has won Top Paper Awards from the Asian/Pacific American Caucus and Urban Communication Foundation within the National Communication Association. In her book Migration, Mobility & Sojourning in Cross-Cultural Films: Interculturing Cinema (2020, Lexington Books), she and her co-author analyze selected cross-cultural films, exploring how intercultural communication functions in each film’s storytelling and in the movement or stasis of the characters’ relationships. Within her Caribbean research, Dr. Williams focuses on Hindu practices of identity- and community-building through music, media, and mediated traditions in the dual-island nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr. Williams has been invited to give research talks at universities, including Harvard University, and has presented her research at refereed academic conferences, including the International Communication Association and National Communication Association. Published in Mobile Media & Communication, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Convergence, and First Monday, she serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the international and interdisciplinary journal, Indenture Papers: Studies on Girmityas, a publication dedicated to the study of the Indian and South Asian indentured diaspora.

At Northeastern, Dr. Williams teaches intercultural communication, visual communication, and interpersonal communication courses. Having also been a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Ramapo College of New Jersey, and a Visiting Scholar at Fordham University, Dr. Williams is experienced with teaching in a variety of educational modes, including in-person, online, and blended formats. Her service to the Department and to the discipline illustrate her commitment to undergraduate education and research, such as her service within the Eastern Communication Association’s Undergraduate Scholars Conference.

Outside of work, Dr. Williams enjoys a happy and busy life with her multiracial family, including her husband and their two boys. She loves traveling, fitness, and walking through cities around the world. As a dedicated and passionate educator that enjoys working within teams, she encourages collaborations, so please contact her to join the many faculty and students with whom she has co-authored award-winning research and co-presented at professional conferences.
