Does an architect need to be licensed?

Although not required for architects to pursue employment, licensure can be an opportunity that gives an architect a competitive edge in a competitive marketplace. A licensed architect can take on greater responsibility within a firm, and liability insurance costs for the firm will be lower. An architect with a license can start his or her own firm and stamp his or her own drawings. Without a license, you won’t have the permission to complete a project without consulting a licensed professional. However, it won’t prevent you from advancing in the field and finding gainful employment.

The first step towards licensure is acquiring an accredited architecture degree. Graduates of the Master of Architecture program at Northeastern receive a NAAB accredited degree, which will allow them to sit for the licensing exams.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) is the professional association for architectural registration boards. The licensing process requirements vary from location to location and it is advisable to check in with the local board to confirm the requirements.

For additional information on licensing, see the NCARB web site.
