Michelle Laboy

Michelle Laboy has Master degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from the University of Michigan, where she received the AIA Henry Adams Medal and also the Thesis Award in 2004. She also has a Bachelor in Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, where she received the Etienne Totti Award given to the student with the highest academic achievement. Prior to becoming an architect, her research in Environmental Engineering was published in science journals and her research in Transportation Planning earned her awards and the national graduate research fellowship from the Federal Department of Transportation.

With interdisciplinary training in architecture, engineering and urban planning, her career integrates teaching and practice, working on award-winning, sustainable and site-driven architecture projects and exploring their performative integration to landscapes, and exploring the cultural, technological and theoretical context of these ideas.

She is currently an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University’s School of Architecture where her research lies at the intersection of Sustainable Architecture and Urban Landscape, studying the evolution and cultural significance of what she calls architectural ecology: that is building systems that are integrated with natural systems to create sustainable and resilient ecosystems, and the spaces that actively engage people with the natural environment.

As a licensed engineer and active practitioner in architecture, she has worked in San Juan, Detroit, Chicago, Barcelona and Boston, including work at SOM managing the plan for Chicago 2016. Her experience ranges from transportation and urban design, to high-rise envelopes, sustainable schools and houses. Associate at Maryann Thompson Architects in Cambridge, a practice dedicated to architecture that is sustainable, site driven and deeply connected to the landscape, Michelle worked in many award-winning projects, and currently manages a 20,000 SF early education project with ambitious sustainable goals, for an Ivy-League campus. She also co-founded FieLDworkshop to work in design competitions and experimental projects exploring sustainable building systems, products and ecological landscapes.
