Professional Experience
Author of “How Journalists and the Public Shape Our Democracy: From Social Media and ‘Fake News’ to Reporting Just the Facts”
Marcus E. Howard is an Associate Teaching Professor at Northeastern University School of Journalism. He teaches news writing and reporting, journalism history, media ethics, and other journalism courses. He also helps administer graduate programs.
His professional areas of interest include political communication, press freedom, race and media, and social justice.
During his journalism career, Howard has written for Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Minneapolis Star Tribune and Savannah Morning News, among other news media outlets.
He previously taught journalism in his home state at the University of Georgia. His media literacy book, “How Journalists and the Public Shape Our Democracy: From Social Media and ‘Fake News’ to Reporting Just the Facts,” was funded by the Mellon Foundation and published in 2019 by the Georgia Humanities Council in association with the Atlanta Press Club.
Howard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Boston College and a Master of Arts degree in political and global affairs journalism from Columbia University.
