Senior Lecturer

Michelle Carr graduated from Northeastern University in May of 2004 with a Bachelors’ degree in Communication Studies; with a focus in Television and Film Production with a minor in History. After the completion of her degree she moved to London and worked for Ascent Media, One Post Production; assisting with various motion pictures as well as commercials and music videos. She then briefly returned to the states working for NBC, Channel 7, WHDH-TV Boston.

IIn 2006 she went back to London and studied Film at Kingston University with her primary research in the area of History and Film looking at the practice and research that goes into the film-making process to produce historical films. More specifically, how filming on location plays a major role in the construction of visual history, adding a sense of connection to the past within historical, heritage, and literary adaptation films. During that time she also worked for the British Film Institute on various projects; including the reconstruction of the BFI Southbank and the London Film Festival.

Michelle joined Northeastern University’s Communication Studies Department in the Fall of 2007 teaching various courses. In 2011 she developed a Dialogue of Civilization Program teaching English Culture and Documentary Filmmaking abroad in London, a program which she has successfully run every year since. Taking more than 300+ students abroad she has overseen the development and production of several documentaries on various social, historical, and art based topics. She has also developed new courses, including the Production Capstone and Newsroom course taught in conjunction with the Journalism Department, a course that within the first semester won a National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Boston/New England Emmy. Michelle continues to teach and develop the Television Studio Production, Television Field Production and Sound Production for Digital Media courses within the department.

Her teaching philosophy is based on the core values and ideas of the famous Chinese Proverb: “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand.” Teaching by example, she works to engage the students intellectually and strives to involve them as much as possible in the practice of media production to help them understand and learn.

Michelle additionally holds a graduate certificate in Business Administration and continues to work professionally in the Boston area on various educational research video projects as a freelance producer, editor and videographer.
