Elodie: A Research-Informed Early Reader Book on Generalized Trust
2025
7″ x 7″
Hardcover Book
Made under the mentorship of Tad Hirsch and Michael Arnold Mages.
Elodie is an early reader book which introduces the importance of generalized trust to children ages 5-7. Generalized trust refers to
the assumptions we make about the benign intentions of other people with whom we have no existing interpersonal relationships. In childhood, this form of trust is central to the formation and maintenance of strong friendships and in adulthood shapes many everyday activities—from interacting online to democratic elections. Yet, generalized trust begins declining for most children around age 5. Elodie functions as an early design intervention to teach children to thoughtfully assess situations of trust, recognize trustworthy behavior, and navigate the world with confidence and care.
