Professor Alpha Arsano’s ARCH 5115: Option Studio presented her architecture students with a unique opportunity: they would be able to work with members of the Ethopian Evangelical Church in Roxbury to develop plans for renovations. Master’s of Architecture student Elisabeth Molnar (’26) and Tanner Boucher (’26) presented their work to the church members as part of their final presentation.
“Our proposal is a mid-budget renovation and addition project that preserves as much of the existing structure as possible to reduce costs and environmental impact,” Molnar and Boucher wrote in their presentation. “All of our design decisions were directly informed by the community engagement sessions. Community needs incorporated into this design include:
– expanded classroom spaces
– dedicated recreation center
– access to natural light
– connection to nature
– flexible program
– modernized, culturally-activated facade”
The result included a renovated sanctuary and seven new classrooms for students.
