Memory Box explores how older adults envision and value reminiscence therapy mediated by voice-based large language models. Through a participatory co-design study with 11 older adults, we explored a conceptual LLM-powered voice system designed to support reminiscing through photos, music, and conversational prompts.
Rather than viewing the system as a neutral technological aid, participants consistently framed it as a relational and emotionally attuned presence, emphasizing emotional safety, attentiveness, conversational continuity, and intergenerational fit. Drawing on insights from storyboards and co-design activities, we translated these expectations into the design of MeBo, a persona-shaped voice companion.
The project advances design guidelines that foreground emotional attunement, conversational intelligence, co-creation, and continuity over time, while explicitly addressing ethical and privacy considerations. A prototype of MeBo is under development to support shared memory-making, legacy-building, and safe, meaningful engagement, while addressing privacy and ethical considerations.
