“Participatory Mapping Frameworks: Past, Present & Future” sought to develop new strategies for democratizing the practice of neighborhood asset mapping. Cara Michell, Juliana Barton and Sylke Meyer partnered with youth leaders at 826 Boston to develop a community-led mapping framework for documenting Roxbury and surrounding neighborhoods. The team envisions this project as the basis for a future participatory mapping workshops and a guidebook for planners, designers and cultural practitioners. The research and workshop process combined the principles of walking/movement practice and research-creation with tools for participatory map making. Guided by adrienne maree brown’s Emergent Strategy framework, we collectively developed common spatial vocabularies. The workshops prioritized the voices of young Roxbury residents and pay homage to the BlackSpace Manifesto principles and heritage conservation methods.
