XR Immersive Media Lab

The XR Immersive Media Lab (XRIML) is a dedicated facility supporting coursework, student projects, and research in extended reality (XR), including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), 360-degree video content creation and full body motion capture.

All Media Studios

The lab provides high-performance Windows workstations with NVIDIA GPUs running Unreal Engine, Unity, and industry-standard 3D modeling and animation software. The XRIML maintains one of the region’s most comprehensive collections of XR hardware, encompassing current-generation VR headsets from Meta, HTC, Valve, and Varjo; AR headsets from Microsoft, Magic Leap, XREAL, VITURE and RayNeo; full-body and facial motion capture systems from Rokoko; a broad inventory of 360-degree cameras from Insta360, GoPro, and Ricoh; and an omnidirectional treadmill for locomotion VR gaming. Using WebCheckOut, the lab circulates equipment rentals, making XR devices available for field research and off-site projects. The XRIML supports research in immersive storytelling, human-computer interaction, spatial computing, architectural visualization, and experience design.

The Spaces

Testing Room

The 857.08-square-foot testing room, with a capacity of 20 people, is specifically designed to accommodate nine robust PC workstations. Featuring a notably eleven-foot-tall ceiling with a grid system for mounting tracking and other equipment above, each workstation includes 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet area outlined on the carpet with safety bollard barriers — all tailored to facilitate multi-user room-scale XR experiences. They come equipped with a Quest 3 for wireless and wired experiences and Logitech MX Ink stylus per-station, allowing for inside-out tracking and industry standard experiences. The testing room accommodates XR to be experienced in nine room scale spaces (6.5 feet by 6.5 feet) with PCs and an additional two room-scale spaces without PCs or up to sixteen stationary spaces (3 feet by 3 feet) for sit-down/standing XR usage. The testing room also has two mounted TVs with A/V input.

Development Room

The 387.11 square feet development room has a capacity of 15 individuals and a standard eight-foot ceiling. The room includes seven PC workstations equipped with Quest 3 headsets for wireless and wired experiences. Among them, three are equipped with Wacom Cintiq displays. A large whiteboard and rolling TV cart are also included within the room with two interlocking tables that can serve as a workspace. The development room also serves as a capacity overflow area for the testing room and can be set up for seven room-scale spaces (5 feet by 5 feet) with PCs with an additional room-scale use without a PC or eleven stationary spaces (3 feet by 3 feet) for XR use.

Classroom

The 188.67-square-foot classroom, capable of hosting 6 people, houses two PC workstations. Like the Testing Room, the Classroom features notably tall eleven-foot ceiling ceilings and a grid system for mounting tracking equipment. Each workstation includes 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet area outlined on the carpet with safety bollard barriers. The workstations also come equipped with a Quest 3 headset for wireless and wired experiences, allowing for inside-out tracking and industry standard experiences. The Rokoko motion capture system is primarily used in the classroom capturing sessions that fit within the area of the space. Functioning as a more dedicated environment for individual use or small teams that need expanded room-scale XR capabilities given the added spacing, it primarily serves for group testing, development, and research sessions. Additionally, the space is equipped for collaborative meetings, featuring an in-room Logitech smart teleconferencing system, wall mounted TV with AV inputs and sound system.
