Northeastern faculty Janet Bobcean will direct two plays by Tennessee Williams for Playhouse Creatures Theatre Company’s Third Annual NYC Tennessee Williams Festival in New York City this June. Bobcean is a board member of the company, whose mission is to explore themes of love and passion through classical, contemporary, and new works. Northeastern alumnus Megan O’Leary ’99 is the Associate Artistic Director of the company.
Bobcean has designed and directed more than 200 stage productions in her distinguished career. Her work has been seen at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the North Carolina Shakespeare Company Festival. Most recently, she designed the sets for the Northeastern’s production of The Last Five Years and columbinus. A member of the NU faculty for more than 30 years, Bobcean teaches directing and design.
The NYC Tennessee Williams Festival begins on June 28 with a performance of William’s The Two Character Play directed by Bobcean and starring award-winning actor Austin Pendleton. Pendleton has enjoyed a distinguished 50-year career on stage and screen. He first received critical acclaim in the original Broadway cast of Fiddler on the Roof. More recently, he appeared with Meryl Streep in Mother Courage and Her Children and directed Uncle Vanya, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal at the Classic Stage Company (NU co-op partner). His direction of Elizabeth Taylor in Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes garnered him a Tony Award nomination.
On June 29, Bobcean will direct a reading of Williams’ The Pink Bedroom, featuring 2015 Tony-nominated Actress Geneva Carr (Hand to God). The Third Annual NYC Tennessee Williams Festival will be held at the Duo Multicultural Arts Center. For more information, visit: http://playhousecreatures.org/.
