Journalism
Congratulations to project leader Carlene Hempel, Teaching Professor of Journalism, and her team of student-journalists on receiving Webby Anthem Awards for their investigation on the continuing fallout from the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
Professor Hempel’s course this past Spring took students directly to Flint, Michigan. Their work together, entitled “Flint Unfiltered: Stories From an American Water Crisis”, features in-depth articles, video, audio reports, and journalism. Flint Unfiltered won in two categories of the Webby Anthem awards: a Silver in the national competition for Sustainability, Environment, and Climate: News and Journalism and a Bronze in the national competition for Sustainability, Environment, and Climate: School/University.

The Webby Anthem Awards are the leading national awards for digital media and organizations, not only for students. Carlene’s class is part of CAMD’s new Science Communication Program, a pivotal component of Northeastern University’s efforts to develop innovate work in the field of Sustainability. Northeastern’s “On-the-Ground” initiative, launched in 2019 by Professor Carlene Hempel, was designed to shine light on an underreported or unfairly forgotten community suffering in the wake of a crisis. Her team of student-journalists immerse themselves in a community and produced a report – with traditional articles, innovative video, audio, photography and graphics – designed to highlight the community’s suffering and inspire public support and remediation.
