Establishing Career Objectives at BOKS & TJX

Areas of Emphasis: Public Advocacy & Organizational Communication

Dominique was really interested in the world of corporate social responsibility, so the Communication Studies Department helped her land her first co-op at BOKS (Build Our Kids’ Success) – an initiative of the Reebok Foundation to give kids a body and brain boost before school. During her 6-month co-op, she assisted in the planning and execution of events including volunteer fairs, trainings and conferences.

To satisfy her other interest in organizational communication the second time around, she co-oped for TJX Companies – a leading off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the U.S. and abroad.

“The Communications Department really does a great job of providing resources for students and then stepping back to encourage them to blaze their own trail. My favorite co-op was at TJX, hands down. Apart from the vast network of past and current Northeastern students that work there and the opportunities to shadow parts of the business that you are not co-oping in, I simply loved what I was doing there. So much so, that I jumped at the chance to work 2 days per week when I resumed classes.”

Thanks to these experiences, Dominique has a clear vision for her career, something she’s noticed her peers studying elsewhere struggling with.

“I did not think I would have such concrete career objectives coming out of my junior year of college by any means. While I think it’s important for me to stay open minded to new possibilities and the chance to enjoy opportunities that I have not explored, I also have very firm objectives my career must hit. I’ve fine-tuned many skills needed to reach my goals, and I’m excited for what my future will hold for me!”
