Antonio Ocampo-Guzman (he/him) is an actor, director, and theatre teacher from Bogotá, Colombia. He has been at Northeastern since 2007 and has served as the Chair of the Department of Theatre since 2019. As Full Professor of Theatre, he teaches all levels of acting, voice and improvisation and directs in the department’s production program.
Recognized as one of Latin America’s most impactful voice teachers, Antonio completed his training with renowned Master Teacher Kristin Linklater (author of Freeing the Natural Voice) in 1998. He adapted this popular practice into Spanish and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the largest university in Latin America, published his La Liberación de la Voz Natural: el Método Linklater in 2010, with reprintings in 2013 and 2015. He is one of the three co-founders of iberVoz, a network of creative practice researchers in the field of voice across Iberoamerica. Antonio serves as a consultant for the Center for Voice Studies (CEUVOZ) in Mexico City and is a proud member of the Voice & Speech Trainers Association (VASTA); he served as its President 2022-2024.
Antonio earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Directing in 2003 from York University in Toronto, Ontario, training under the guidance of David Rotenberg. He concurrently furthered his training in voice and speech under David Smukler, receiving a Graduate Diploma in Voice. He has directed plays and operas for New Repertory Theatre, Boston Midsummer Opera, the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival, Dixon Place, Teatro Libre, Tallahassee Little Theatre, The Theatre Offensive, Stages Theatre Company, The Pato Farsante Company, and The British Council. He has also worked with solo performers Jeff McMahon and Carlos Manuel and served as voice and text coach for Actors’ Shakespeare Project and the Asolo Repertory Theatre.
Several of Antonio’s articles and essays about his experiences as a bilingual theatre artist have been published in, among others, American Theatre Magazine, the Voice & Speech Review, the Stanford Shakespeare Encyclopedia, Paso de Gato (Mexico), Revista Peldaño (Argentina), Back Stage East, Dramatics Magazine, and the online journal Borrowers and Lenders. He is featured in Latinx Actor Training, The Politics of American Actor Training and Colorblind Shakespeare: New Perspectives in Race & Performance, collections published by Routledge.
Antonio joined Northeastern’s Department of Theatre in 2007 and has been Chair since 2019. Previously, he was on the faculty at Arizona State University, Florida State University, Emerson College and Boston College. He has taught workshops and master classes at Walnut Hill, Shakespeare & Company, The Linklater Studio, The Andrea Southwick Studio, The New Theatre Conservatory, FSU/Asolo Theatre Conservatory, the Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern, the Concord Players, Working Classroom and the Hampshire Shakespeare Company. Internationally, he has taught all over Latin America, as well as Spain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Canada, Greece, and Sweden.
